Student Health Insurance

Some states have begun to require that every part time or full time student that is enrolled in any of the higher educational institutions for learning be actively enrolled in a student health insurance program. The coverage has certain minimums that must be complied with and will vary from state to state.

Usually these programs ensure that the student have a reasonably type of coverage that includes both preventive as well as primary care or emergency services, necessary hospitalization, ambulatory needs and mental health assistance. One of the reasons that the mandatory health insurance programs are being initiated at this time is an effort to promote the students chances of receiving quality health coverage. Often times the universities themselves will bill the students for their portion of the health insurance plan. Many times the students are afforded the option of either purchasing the insurance plan from their school or obtaining one from a private health insurance company. Generally it is less expense to select the school sponsored program. When enrolling in the school the student will be required to purchase the school health plan or they must show adequate proof of a comparable policy prior to formal acceptance by the school.

It is likely that the student can be enrolled in their parent’s health plan and not be required to take that one which is offered by the educational institution, in which case they can request a waiver. Such a plan must be completely compatible with that offered by the school program. The services that are covered under the student’s alternate plan must be accessible to the student within the area where they attend classes. The final burden of proof for this alternate insurance lies with the student himself.

Many of the students usually have insurance coverage from their parent’s policy. If a student or their parents have any types of questions concerning these rules that are being established by the schools they should immediately contact the school administration offices where the student will be attending.
